To be clear, I mean I would put the disk image on a new HD using an external docking station connected to another computer, and then take the drive with the image on it and install it in the VB. Would that make it pretty much plug-and-play?

Unfortunately I don't have a monitor and keyboard to use. Can I put the image of 2.4 on the new drive external to the VB and then just install it? If I do it that way, can I avoid needing a keyboard and monitor connected to the VB?

Maybe it is not memory. I just restarted the VB and this is the System Info screen:

I see your point about the physical memory usage. In my case the machine was working perfectly (for years) and one morning the Squeezeboxes couldn't connect to it. In that way it seems like something physical might have failed rather than software. Have you seen RAM fail on these machines? Does it make sense to try replacing RAM before upgrading the VB software? If so, what replacement RAM should I use?

Install VB 2.4 using a CDR as per the procedure, backup your library first!

    Thanks.

I tried to upgrade mine through the Vortexbox home page.....but I don;t think it worked.

In any case it is bit hard for a technically challenged person like me to make a bootable USB for Linux based server and install the new software...

Same here...did reboot several times....the 'green screen' has been running for almost 12 hours now.....still apparently loading....
