  • LMS suddenly stopped working

I have been running LMS on a Vortex Box (VB100b: 2 Processors Atom CPU D2500 @ 1.86 GHz) without trouble since 2012. Today I am unable to access LMS. I can access the Vortex Box via a Mac on the LAN. From Terminal I ran:

    yum clean all
    yum -y update

I rebooted the Vortex Box. When accessing the Vortex Box System Configuration page from a browser on the Mac it indicates that LMS is running (as it did prior to the above steps). I can stop LMS from that page, and I can restart it. From that view it seems to be working. However, when I click on the Squeezebox Server icon in the left panel, or when I try to connect to the Vortex Box from a Squeezebox Touch, I cannot connect. On the computer, I will see either a white screen or a teal color screen with with a spinning wheel, but I get no connection.

I had not made any changes to the system. I just woke up this morning, and it was behaving this way. Any ideas?

Also, I believe that I was running LMS ver. 2.2.

My old Vortexbox server has develop a similar issue since last Monday - I cannot load LMS.

It is around 7 years old and has been working very well.

I can still access the server via my networks and the Vortexbox main page seems to be working fine - it is just that when you try to go to LMS, the LMS does not load.

Any help and comments are much appreciated.

Did you try rebooting your VortexBox?

Yes, I have rebooted the VortexBox. I get the same result. LMS appears to be running. I can start it and stop it from the System Configuration Page. But if I try to open LMS it endlessly shows Loading Logitech Media Server with the spinning wheel.

Same here...did reboot several times....the 'green screen' has been running for almost 12 hours now.....still apparently loading....

Your physical memory usage seems extremely high for a rebooted machine ... could both of you have bad memory?

Which VB version level are both of you at?
I recommend you upgrade your Vortexbox see below link:

                          Thanks.

I tried to upgrade mine through the Vortexbox home page.....but I don;t think it worked.

In any case it is bit hard for a technically challenged person like me to make a bootable USB for Linux based server and install the new software...

Install VB 2.4 using a CDR as per the procedure, backup your library first!

I see your point about the physical memory usage. In my case the machine was working perfectly (for years) and one morning the Squeezeboxes couldn't connect to it. In that way it seems like something physical might have failed rather than software. Have you seen RAM fail on these machines? Does it make sense to try replacing RAM before upgrading the VB software? If so, what replacement RAM should I use?
