You are not getting artist/album metadata because the VB CD ripper uses FREEDB database for obtaining such info, and the database has recently been shut down.

Having had a VortexBox for more than 7 years with no software updates I find that the 1tb drive is over 90% full so need to do something! I am running Fedora 16 and Vortexbox 2.2 and can no longer get Artist/CD data. Not being any kind of IT expert, is is worth trying to update the box or add a disc ? If so what and how? All is backed up on a portable drive...Do I need to update the the software first and if so, how? Simple instructions for simpletons please

    I tried this:
[[email protected] ~]# dnf -y update

    and got this result:

    RPM Fusion for Fedora 25 - Nonfree 69 kB/s | 144 kB 00:02
Failed to synchronize cache for repo 'vortexbox', disabling.
    Dependencies resolved.
    Nothing to do.
    Complete!
    [[email protected] ~]#

What does the 'Failed to synchronize cache for repo 'vortexbox'..' mean ??

I had no luck creating a usable USB installation from the 2.5 instructions. I'm on a mac and I even borroeed a PC to try to get it working and couldn't. All I got was a vanilla Clonezilla screen (ie no option for VB 2.5)

    So, instead I
    - backed up Plex library to /storage (https://support.plex.tv/articles/202...ctory-located/)
    - backed up /storage to external USB
    - backed up cd rip settings (just copy text from Nano into a notes app) https://wiki.vortexbox.org/cd_how-to_s
    - did a fresh install of 2.4 from a CD
    - did 2 disk install here: https://www.vortexbox.org/forum/supp...sd-data-on-hdd
    - installed plex via VB

Then I upgraded 2.4 to 2.5 as here NB the default instructions did not work
    https://www.vortexbox.org/forum/main...releases/page3

    I did this
    1.
    HTML Code:
    dnf install dnf-plugin-system-upgrade
    2.
    HTML Code:
    dnf -y system-upgrade download —releasever=25 —nogpgcheck —allowerasing
    3.
    HTML Code:
    dnf system-upgrade reboot
That gave me a working 2.5 install! Whoop!

    I then
    - did restore of /storage from backup USB disk
    - moved the plex library back (go to where plex back up is in storage)
    HTML Code:
    cp -R * /var/lib/plexmediaserver/Library/Application\ Support/Plex\ Media\ Server/
    - updated plex via command line
    HTML Code:
    dnf install https://downloads.plex.tv/plex-media-server-new/1.16.5.1554-1e5ff713d/redhat/plexmediaserver-1.16.5.1554-1e5ff713d.x86_64.rpm
    - restored cd rip settings

Hope that help someone! Good luck, you'll need it!

I followed mrjoe's post and managed to update Fedora from 23 to 25, which was great. But vortex is still at version 2.4 and didn't update to version 2.5. Any ideas ??

After playing around I managed to destroy LMS.
I think I give up and look for alternatives. Maybe time is come to change approach.

Edit: I just wanted a Logitech Media Server, a Spotify connector plugin and if possible a DNLA for the other files (pictures and a couple of private videos from the phone).
I am trying daphile and I like it. It is just a distribution with a LMS. It looks quite stable and easy to setup. The only problem is that I cannot access the linux server (write only) but for the moment I do not need anything else. It is free but not open source (based on Gentoo it seems).

I gave away on pretending bitperfect audio. Since this year I use the USB output of a mini-computer (just up to 48KHz) instead of the DAC up to 192KHz that I used to have. Actually I listen to music on a TV audio bar (with hifi quality but limited to space it takes). I am simplifying and it seems the next step is change Vortexbox for a simple, easier to use, but less powerful, alternative. I can play music from my harddisk (around 10.000 songs) and from Spotify. And my family too can use it and send their Spotify playlists there.

Maybe in the future I may come back to Vortexbox if things change. But I have no time to play around with new versions and dependencies. And to have an OS that is two years without maintenance is a bit risky to me.

I answer to myself. I tried release ver. 26 and was succesful.

But I get dependencies errors with ver. 27 (related to PERL for LMS)
There is another thread where chabelo explains what he does to go to vers. 30.
I tried also to jump from 26 to 30 but i get 6 errors (again Perl).

I will give up and stay at 26.

I found it too late and did an "update" instead of a "system-upgrade". Let's see if it is working correctly.

Question. What would happen if I upgrade to release 30 or 31?

    Thanks.

I also needed to update Plex user permissions so it would update metadata and albulm art.

go to plex media server directory in var/lib and then do this (probably hugely insecure thing!)

    HTML Code:
    chmod -R * 777
